What to Expect in the 6th grade

Welcome to 6th grade! Welcome to 6th grade! Your child’s success requires a three-part team: your child, your child’s teachers, and you! When we all work together, great things can happen!

Parent/Teacher communication is essential in your child’s education. One way to communicate is through the use of your child’s agenda. Your child will write their homework down each day in the agenda. Their behavior points and the initials of your child’s teacher will be written in the agenda at the end of each day. Please be sure to review and initial your child’s agenda each night. You can also email us or call us at the emails and phone numbers listed on the school district website.

Switching Classes:

In sixth grade, the students switch classes. The students will mainly travel with their reading groups for all subjects except for math and specials.

Grading:

Each nine weeks your child will receive a progress report and report card. Progress Reports are posted on goedustar mid-way through each report period. Report cards will be issued after each nine-week period. A grade is given in each subject.

Homework:

Homework is an educational imperative. It can be used to teach new skills, reinforce old concepts and it helps teachers to guide instruction. Furthermore, it also cultivates good study habits. Teachers expect students to try their best on their homework and parents can always enhance the process. They can provide the necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, and provide continual praise and support. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers if any problems arise. If a homework assignment cannot be completed, please let teachers know.

Excuses:

When students are absent, a signed excuse must be sent to your child’s teacher. The excuse should be brought to school when your child returns. Notes are also needed for late arrivals and early dismissals. Please remind your child to give their homeroom teacher the note upon his or her arrival.

Conferences:

If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, please call any 6th grade teacher to schedule a phone conference or set up a meeting time. The general extension for the Upper Elementary is ext. 2000.
